Acoustic detection in a rainy climate, on difficult ground.

Water-loss detection on the Rize drinking-water network by acoustic listening and correlation; field work carried out on sloping terrain and in high ground moisture.

Field conditions

Rize's steep topography and heavy rainfall regime are conditions that make acoustic listening harder: ground moisture carries sound and can produce misleading signals. For this reason every suspect point was confirmed with a correlator between two contact points.

Result

The leaks located were passed to the municipality with coordinates and photographs; a priority order was drawn up for the repair crews.

Result

Difficult ground means more verification.

On moist, sloping ground, listening alone is not enough; correlation and repeat measurement prevent a wrong excavation.
