Mapping the loss with pressure, step and zero-pressure tests.
Water-loss detection on the Kilis drinking-water network; installation of pressure data loggers, zero-pressure and step tests, acoustic listening and billing analysis. The work lasted six months.
- Duration
- 6months
- Pressure monitoring
- 24/7logger
- Test method
- Step + zero-pressure
- Pressure sensor
- 1–30 bar data logger
Method
24/7 pressure monitoring was carried out by placing pressure data loggers at critical points. With a step test, mains were closed one by one to narrow down which segment the loss was concentrated in; with a zero-pressure test, the tightness of the isolated zones was measured.
Acoustic listening
In the narrowed-down zones, leak points were located to the metre by night acoustic listening and correlation; each point was recorded with its GPS coordinates, sound level and a photograph.
Billing analysis
Customer consumption records were reviewed to separate out the apparent-loss items (meter error, unauthorised use, billing) and report them independently of the physical loss.

Result
Physical and apparent loss are measured separately.
Pressure and flow data show where the loss is; billing analysis shows the type of loss. Together they set the right intervention priority.
